What’s the number one reason consumers abandon wearables, and the biggest barrier to broader IoT deployment? Power. The good news: solutions are already on the market. Thermoelectric technology converts heat into electric power – it’s been used by NASA to power the Voyager spacecraft as well as the Curiosity Mars rover.

And thermal power can be harvested and delivered anywhere a temperature differential is available: on the body, on equipment or within HVAC airflows, for example. In this talk, Nicole Cifani describes how the world’s first smartwatch that you don’t have to charge and powered by your body heat was created – whilst doing all the usual smartwatch functions like measuring the wearer’s calories burned, activity level, and sleep pattern.
